Gameweek 27 was made extra tricky due to blank gameweeks for three of the top six (Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal). Nonetheless, Man City picked up a fortuitous victory over Everton to stay top while Man United lumbered to a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Watford. Spurs bounced back nicely to beat Leeds 4-0, the game that ultimately brought an end to Marcelo Bielsa’s time at the club. On the FPL front, this gameweek only had an average of 40 points as managers had to juggle chip usage due to the blank gameweek. Only two of last week’s picks managed points returns.
Gameweek 27 top 3 performers
1. Matt Doherty – 18 points (90 minutes, one goal, one assist, clean sheet, 3BPS)
2. Matthew Cash – 14 points (90 minutes, one goal, clean sheet, yellow card, 3BSP)
3. Fabian Schar – 12 points (90 minutes, one assist, clean sheet, 3BPS)
Let’s take a look at the best picks for this week, reviewing their GW27 performance and previewing their GW28 points potential, looking at recent form and favourable fixtures.
1. Antonio Rüdiger – £6.1m (DEF); 20.6% ownership
GW27 review – N/A (League Cup Final)
GW28 preview – Burnley (A); Norwich (A)
Chelsea will be hoping to bounce back from the League Cup disappointment and hopefully chase down Man City and Liverpool. They play Burnley and Norwich away this week, two sides not renowned for scoring so clean sheet potential is very high. Don’t be surprised if Rüdiger pops up to net on the other end too. He has two goals and three assists so far this season.
2. Reece James – £6.2m (DEF); 10.4% ownership
GW27 review – N/A (League Cup Final)
GW28 preview – Burnley (A); Norwich (A)
As mentioned with Rüdiger, Chelsea are going to want to bounce back from the League Cup final disappointment and will be hoping for a strong defensive showing. James has an even stronger attacking presence due to his goals and assists potential. James has four goals and assists to his name this season already which is impressive for a defender.
3. Mason Mount – £7.5m (MID); 12.5% ownership
GW27 review – N/A (League Cup Final)
GW28 preview – Burnley (A); Norwich (A)
Mount completes the Chelsea triple-up this week and is probably the most attractive Chelsea midfield prospect currently. Despite not scoring for a while, he is Chelsea’s top midfield points scorer and has played consistent minutes, notching seven goals and seven assists already this season. He netted a hat-trick the last time out against Norwich so this week presents a good opportunity for him to score again.
4. Phillippe Coutinho – £7.4m (MID); 20.8% ownership
GW27 review – 3 points (85 minutes, clean sheet)
GW28 preview – Southampton (H); Leeds (A)
Phillippe Coutinho is the first Villa option this week, with an exciting DGW against Southampton and Leeds. Coutinho has been a top addition to the Villa side since his return in January. He has two goals and two assists in just six appearances and will hope to add to that to propel Villa up the table.
5. Matthew Cash – £5.1m (DEF); 5.4% ownership
GW27 review – performance noted under top 3 performers
GW28 preview – Southampton (H); Leeds (A)
The 2nd Villa pick this last week’s hero, Matty Cash. He produced returns in an important victory for Villa and has a good chance this week for a clean sheet in both outings, not to mention attacking returns as well. Two goals, an assist and nine clean sheets already this season and will want to, like Coutinho, help push Villa towards a European berth.
6. Maximilian Kilman – £4.6m (DEF); 3.3% ownership
GW27 review – 2 points (90 minutes)
GW28 preview – Crystal Palace (H); Watford (H)
A DGW with two home fixtures for Wolves this week presents a brilliant chance for them to try and make a late push for the top 4, or at worst, the top 6. They’ve been excellent defensively with nine clean sheets for Kilman and only conceding only 21 goals, the fourth-tightest defence in the league. Both Palace and Watford tend to score in bursts so Kilman is a good option.
