Previous Review Results
So as we sit in the final International break of 2019 it’s time again to take a look back at the previous few weeks to see who was good and who was bad as well as taking a look at my own picks. This is where we start:
Willy Boly
Sorry about this one but I blame unforeseen circumstances. He played the full 90 against Southampton before picking up a broken ankle in the Europa League. As a result, he hasn’t featured since. This one just never got going.
Anthony Martial
This one was much better. A goal, two assists and two bonus points have combined for a total of 18 points over the last three games. Still a midfielder playing as a forward, the fixtures get a bit stiffer but Martial should continue to bring in a good stream of points and he’s still great value.
Jamie Vardy
I really hope you followed me on this one. Far and away the highest scoring player over this period, Vardy has notched six goals, two assists and eight bonus points making an amazing total of 46 points in just four gameweeks. So if you had captained him for all four that would have made 92 points. His favourable run goes on for a while yet so if you don’t have him and are wondering if you have missed the boat, my opinion is no, you haven’t.
Now onto those players who have impressed (N.B. Because we have touched on him already, I will exclude Vardy):
Caglar Soyuncu
This is painful for me as someone who has benched him for that last three (I console myself with the fact I got him in Gameweek Three so have made some cash) but the Turk’s last three have yielded 28 points courtesy of three clean sheets, a goal and five bonus points.
Christian Pulisic
As many players looked to Callum Hudson-Odoi it turned out to be his rival who stood out. The American announced himself with a hat trick against Burnley and followed it up with goals against Crystal Palace and Watford, also yielding five bonus points for a total of 37 points. After a tricky looking tie at the Etihad, Pulisic has another nice run of games that could see him continue this form
Marcus Rashford
With Vardy excluded from consideration, the title passes to Martial’s United teammate. The Englishman has thrived since Martial’s return registering three goals, one assist and five bonus points in the last four for a total of 25 points. As long as Martial stays fit, Rashford should continue to prosper.
The Bad
Ryan Bertrand
Oh, dear Ryan Bertrand. A one-pointer against Wolves was followed by the Saints defender breaking the FPL record for the worst score in a single Gameweek by scoring -6 against Leicester after conceding nine goals and being sent off. He is only just back from that ban and currently sits on an overall total of -1
Kevin De Bruyne and Mason Mount
This one is tied between two men who are both owned by over a third of players but who have flattered to deceive in the last four managing just an assist each. For City, a tougher looking run beckons, though De Bryune has tended to step up in the big games. For Mount, his sureness of starts in Chelsea’s favourable run is currently his major advantage.
Callum Wilson
A player I have hated in FPL for years now due to his lack of returns when I owned and a plethora of returns when I didn’t, many fancied the Bournemouth man for a run of games that included Norwich, Watford and Newcastle. Wilson failed to muster a single attacking return over any of them. In fact, having returned in all his first seven games Wilson has now failed to return in his last five.
Ones to Watch
So who do I have my eye on for the next few?
Daryl Janmaat (WAT) – Price £4.3m, Ownership 2%
Brought into to the side after the mauling at Manchester City the Dutchman is priced very favourably. Just one assist doesn’t do justice to his attacking threat and he accumulated seven bonus points in just six games. The fixtures are a mixed bag but with his price, Janmaat is nice option who can be rotated in and out of your XI as needed.
Wilfried Zaha (CPL) – Price £6.7m, Ownership 7.8%
Just a couple of assists to his name this season but Zaha’s capabilities are well known and after hosting Liverpool Palace embark on an extremely favourable run (bur, BOU, wat, BRI, new, WHM, sot, nor) that could see Zaha ignite his season.
Danny Ings (SOT)- Price £6m, Ownership 2.9%
A player I was reluctant to recommend having been burnt by injuries in the past, the former Burnley and Liverpool man looks to have put those issues behind him and when fit he’s a reliable goalscorer who has penalties. A run of fixtures that reads (WAT, NOR, new, WHM, avl) looks like a great run for picking up some points.
