Is Salah’s Fantasy League Record A Good Indicator He’s The Best Winger In EPL History?

Last updated on April 16th, 2025

Introduction

Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez are the only two players who can rival Mo Salah’s claim as Liverpool’s best-ever EPL player. For all of his majestic, raw skill, Suarez wasn’t in the league long enough to be considered a true EPL great in the eyes of many fans and analysts.

In fact, Suarez’s mesmeric season in 2013/14 was the closest any other player has come to getting 300 points. The only player to have surpassed 300 points in fantasy football is Mo Salah, a feat he achieved in 2017/18 and one he has achieved already this season.

Betting On Outright Outcomes

The online gambling world has exploded over the last 25 years, with many sports betting companies offering a range of outright markets that weren’t available before the internet rose to prominence. Sports betting platforms have cast their net as far as possible, with many successfully branching into online casino gaming and live blackjack.

In the UK, betting is synonymous with the top sports. Still, with many of these betting platforms now branching into areas they hadn’t ventured into before and becoming internationally renowned, this speaks to the growing trends within the gambling world.

At the same time, online blackjack and outright EPL betting might constitute two different markets now that betting platforms have become one-stop shops, which include offering avenues for gamblers to try out both.

This includes all types of casino games, whether online poker, slots, or whatever it may be – the amount of betting markets out there is significant. You can’t specifically bet on fantasy football points and outcomes, but given that the points mirror outcomes you can bet on, outright Golden Boot markets are always an interesting market to explore in the days or weeks leading up to the beginning of the EPL season.

The top FPL captain pickers almost exclusively have Salah as their captain, and given he’s the only player who has ever got more than 300 points in one season – it’s pretty easy to see why.

Salah’s Complete Skillset

Not only has Mo won the Golden Boot before, as well as sharing it with Son Heung-min in 2022. He is also one of the best in creating goals, having already created 18 goals this season, which is his record in the EPL. He explains why he’s broken the 300-point market this season with six games to spare.

Some would argue that other players who have come close to the biggest FPL tallies, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez, were not operating at the peak of their powers. This is undoubtedly the case for Cristiano Ronaldo, who many believe entered his prime once he left Manchester United and signed for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo and Mo share many similarities, especially on paper. Although Cristiano dominated the Utd team, he took all the penalties and free kicks and would often take a shot at goal whenever he got half a yard of space. If you had him in your FPL team back then, you were onto a winner. Ronaldo’s incredible 2010s, which saw him win several Ballon d’Or awards, speak to how precocious he was.

However, his best years were in Spain, and you could argue that Luis Suarez’s best years in Spain were too – whereas Mo has dedicated a decade of his best years to the EPL and to Liverpool – which is one of the most compelling arguments about him being the best winger in the history of the league.

Is FPL A Good Indicator?

Yes and no. You won’t find a player with a lousy season at the top of point-scoring records. However, the idea of the “best player” is subjective. Are we really going to sit here and say Salah is unequivocally better than Cristiano? No. Ronaldo was head-to-head with Messi at certain stages of his career, although their rivalry was eventually settled when Messi lifted the 2022 World Cup.

Mo is an elite talent, there’s no doubt about that, but when all is said and done, will he be considered one of the greatest players of all time next to Cristiano? Probably not. But you could argue that he should be.

All the players who sat at the top of the FPL records are some of the best players in EPL history, Ronaldo, Shearer, Henry, Salah – so there’s no doubt a correlation between the two.

Final Thoughts

Ronaldo may have been a winger during his Man Utd prime, but he morphed into an out-and-out number 9 at Real Madrid. On the other hand, Salah orchestrated games from the wing and smashed through goal and assist records.

If we had to say for definite, we’d still have to put Ronaldo above him, only because of how his career panned out. However, following Salah’s two-year extension, if he can keep on the form and quality he’s shown this season, then when he retires, he could easily be in the conversation as the best EPL winger of all time.
